Audio in text: how to transcribe a recording locally in the browser
The «Audio in text» tool transcribes an uploaded audio recording using a local speech recognition model running in the browser. This means the sound is not sent to external servers for recognition, but is processed on your device. This approach is convenient for confidential recordings, but imposes limitations on length and file size. In this guide we will prepare the audio, check what to check manually and in which cases the tool is not suitable.
Open tool: Audio transcription ↗What exactly does the tool do and what to expect from it
«Audio in text» accepts an audio file and returns a textual transcription. The speech recognition model works locally in the browser, so the audio is not sent to an external service. You select the output language, press the Generate button and get one result in a separate panel. The ready text can be copied or downloaded in TXT format. Subtitles SRT and eSpeak speech synthesis in WAV are also available additionally, but these are separate functions, not part of the transcription.
It is important to understand the limits: the tool does not perform batch processing, does not save history automatically, does not integrate with other systems and does not export to DOCX or PDF. The maximum audio size for the browser is 20 MB and 5 minutes. If the recording is longer, it will have to be split into parts. The model may make mistakes, and queue and availability depend on the load. This is not a replacement for a professional subtitling editor, but a quick way to get a rough text.
Example: upload an interview.mp3 file (4 minutes, 12 MB), select the language «Russian», press «Generate». After a while text will appear in the panel. Copy it or download as TXT.
How to prepare audio for a more accurate result
The quality of transcription depends heavily on the original recording. If possible, use a file with a single speaker, without background music and strong echo. Noise, multiple overlapping voices and a poor microphone increase the number of errors. Before loading check that the volume is sufficient, but there is no clipping. If the recording contains long pauses, they can be trimmed - this will reduce the file size and speed up processing.
The file format also matters. The tool accepts audio that the browser can decode. Usually this is MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A. If the file does not load, try converting it to MP3 with a bitrate of 128–192 kbps. Do not artificially increase the bitrate: this will not add intelligibility, but will increase the size. For recordings from a phone, mono often suffices, 16 kHz - speech remains intelligible, and the file takes up less space.
If the recording contains special terms, names or abbreviations, prepare a list of correct spellings in advance. After transcription you will be able to quickly replace erroneous variants. This is especially useful for interviews, lectures and technical discussions, where the model may not know rare words.
Example: a lecture recording contains the word «neuroplasticity». The model may give «neuro plasticity» or «neuroplasticity». Pre-add the correct option to the list for replacement.
What to check manually after transcription
Automatic transcription is a draft, not a final text. First of all check names, numbers, dates, organization names and special terms. The model often confuses words that sound similar, especially if the speaker speaks quickly or has an accent. For example, «sto» and «sta», «tri» and «trista» may be confused. Cross-check key numbers with the original recording.
Secondly pay attention to punctuation and sentence breaks. The local model may not set punctuation marks or do it inconsistently. If the text is intended for publication, you will have to manually break it into paragraphs, add headers and fix logical pauses. Also check that whole phrases are not skipped: sometimes the model «swallows» quiet passages.
The third step is checking for semantic distortions. Even if words are recognized correctly, the order may be violated and negations may be lost. Read the text in its entirety and make sure the meaning matches the recording. If you are making subtitles, check the time codes in SRT: they may shift relative to speech.
Example: in the recording it is said «profit increased by 15 percent». The model may give «profit increased by 50 percent». Such an error is critical, so numbers should always be checked manually.
When the tool is not suitable
The tool is not designed for long recordings. The 20 MB and 5 minute limit means that an hour-long podcast or a two-hour meeting will have to be cut into fragments. This increases the time for assembly and verification. If you need to transcribe many files in a row, batch processing is not available here - each file is uploaded separately.
If the audio contains strong background noise, music or multiple speakers at the same time, the quality will be low. In such cases it is better to use specialized services with noise cancellation and diarization (dividing by speakers). The tool is also not suitable for languages that are not supported by the model. Check the list of available languages before uploading.
Do not use this tool for legally significant recordings, medical consultations or financial reports without subsequent verification by a specialist. Automatic transcription may contain errors that lead to incorrect conclusions. If the recording is confidential, local processing is a plus, but remember that the browser and device must be protected.
Example: an interview recording with three speakers in a noisy cafe. The tool will output text, but without dividing by voices, and many replicas will be confused. Better to choose a service with diarization.
How to organize manual and automatic work
An effective approach is to divide the task into stages. First, automatic transcription gives a draft. Then you manually correct errors, relying on the audio. After that you can edit the text for readability: remove filler words, repetitions, slips of the tongue, if permissible. At the final stage check facts, numbers and names. Such a pipeline saves time compared to full manual transcription, but does not eliminate verification.
If the recording is long, divide it into meaning blocks of 3–5 minutes. This will simplify both loading and verification. After transcribing each block, join the text manually, following the joints. Do not rely on automatic joining: words may be lost at the boundaries. Keep a list of replacements for frequently occurring errors to speed up editing.
For subtitles use SRT, which the tool generates, but check the line length and display time. Too long lines are inconvenient for reading. Divide them manually. If you are making text for an article, subtitles are not necessary, just take the transcription and edit it as ordinary text.
Example: a 10-minute interview. Divide into three parts of 3–4 minutes. Transcribe each, then combine into one document. Check names and numbers. Edit for publication.
Limitations and typical errors
The local model may make mistakes on words that are not in its dictionary, on proper names and on mixing languages. If there are English inserts in the speech, they may be recognized as Russian words or skipped. The model may also not set punctuation marks, especially in long sentences. Do not expect an ideal result without editing.
The tool does not perform automatic saving. If you close the tab, the result may be lost. Download TXT or copy the text immediately after generation. Queue and availability may change: during peak hours processing takes more time. If the file is not accepted, check the size and format. Remember that 20 MB is approximately 5 minutes of audio in MP3 with a bitrate of 128 kbps.
Do not use the tool for creating photorealistic images or generating video - this is not its function. There is also no voice cloning. eSpeak speech synthesis in WAV is a separate capability, but it is not related to transcription. Clearly separate tasks so as not to waste time on unsuitable functions.
Example: you uploaded a 25 MB file. The tool will not accept it. Convert to MP3 with a lower bitrate or trim to 5 minutes.
Combining manual work and AI for translating audio into text is not a competition, but a division of labor. The «Audio in text» tool quickly gives a draft, working locally in the browser, but requires verification. Give it the primary recognition, and keep control of numbers, names, terms and meaning yourself. Take into account the limitations: 20 MB, 5 minutes, no batch processing and no automatic saving. If the recording is noisy, long or contains multiple speakers, consider alternatives. Such an approach saves time and reduces the risk of errors.
