Shopping list: how to combine ingredients from dishes
The "Shopping list" tool helps turn a list of dishes into a grouped product list. You enter source data (for example, dish names and their ingredients) and the number of portions, and the service tries to combine duplicate positions and indicate quantities. This does not replace your attention: AI can make mistakes in units of measurement, skip positions or incorrectly sum. In this article we will look at which steps are better to automate, what to check yourself and in which cases the tool will not fit.
Open tool: Shopping list maker ↗What exactly does the tool do
The service accepts a textual description of dishes and a number of portions. Based on this data it forms a grouped list: for example, all vegetables in one section, cereals and pasta in another. If the same ingredient appears in different dishes, the tool tries to add up its quantity. However, it does not know what you have at home, and it does not check product freshness.
It is important to understand: this is a text assistant, not a recipe database. It does not search for dishes on the Internet and does not select substitutes. Everything it does is analyze the text you entered. Therefore, the quality of the result directly depends on how detailed and unambiguously you describe ingredients and portions.
Input example: "Pasta with tomatoes and basil (for 2 servings): spaghetti 200 g, tomatoes 300 g, basil 20 g, olive oil 2 tbsp. Salad with nuts, tomatoes and cucumber (for 2 servings): nuts 200 g, tomatoes 200 g, cucumber 150 g, olive oil 1 tbsp."
How to prepare source data
Write ingredients in a list, each on a new line. Indicate quantity and unit of measurement: grams, milliliters, pieces, tablespoons. If units are different, AI may try to convert them to one, but not always correctly. It is better to pre-convert everything to grams or milliliters if possible.
Clearly separate dishes. For example, use headings or blank lines. If you just list ingredients one after another, the tool may not understand which dish they belong to and group them incorrectly. Also specify the number of portions for each dish - this will help recalculate quantities if you are cooking for a different number of people.
Poor input: "tomatoes, basil, spaghetti, nuts, cucumber". Good input: "Dish 1: spaghetti 200 g, tomatoes 300 g, basil 20 g. Dish 2: nuts 200 g, tomatoes 200 g, cucumber 150 g".
How to check the result
After generation carefully read the list. Check that all ingredients are in place. Especially those that appear in several dishes: their quantity should be summed. If in one dish tomatoes are specified in grams and in another - in pieces, AI may leave two separate lines. This is normal, but you will have to bring them to a convenient unit manually.
Check units of measurement. Sometimes the service may confuse grams and milliliters or spoons and pieces. If you see a strange quantity (for example, 500 g of basil), recalculate. Also check that spices and oils are not lost: they are often indicated at the end, and AI may skip them.
After processing the example above, the list may contain lines: "Tomatoes - 500 g", "Olive oil - 3 tbsp.", "Spaghetti - 200 g", "Nuts - 200 g", "Cucumber - 150 g", "Basil - 20 g". Check that the oil is really 3 tbsp., not 2 + 1 separately.
What to do manually
Manual work is needed at the stage of menu planning and stock checking. Before making a list, go around the kitchen and mark what you already have. AI does not know what is lying in your cupboard, so it will include everything in the list, even if you have three packs of spaghetti. Cross out the unnecessary yourself.
You also need to manually adjust quantities to your reality. For example, if you do not like a lot of basil, reduce it. AI does not know your preferences. The final list is a draft that you bring to perfection.
If you already have olive oil, cross it out from the list. If you are cooking for 4 portions instead of 2, double the quantities manually or specify the desired number in the "People or portions" field.
When the tool is not suitable
The service will not suit if you have very complex recipes with non-standard units (pinches, "to taste") or if ingredients are described in free form without quantities. In such cases AI may give an inaccurate result, and you will have to check every line.
The tool is also not designed for purchasing products for a week taking into account sales and discounts. It does not compare prices and does not optimize the budget. If you need to plan purchases with financial account, it is better to use tables or specialized applications.
Recipe "Salad: a little tomatoes, cucumber, greens to taste" will not give an exact list. Better to specify approximate grammes, otherwise AI will not be able to combine positions.
Limitations and typical errors
The tool may make mistakes in summing up if units of measurement are different. For example, "1 cup of tomatoes" and "200 g of tomatoes" it may not add up. It also does not always understand context: "tomato paste" and "tomatoes" are different products, but AI may confuse them. Always check the logic of grouping.
Another error - skipping ingredients that are indicated at the end of the list or in brackets. If you write "salt, pepper (to taste)", AI may ignore them. Better to bring such positions separately and add to the list manually.
If in one dish "onion 1 piece" and in another "onion 100 g", AI may leave two lines. You will have to decide how much this is in total and combine independently.
Practical example: two dishes
Let's take two dishes: pasta with tomatoes and basil and nut salad with tomatoes and cucumber. In the first dish for 2 servings: spaghetti 200 g, tomatoes 300 g, basil 20 g, olive oil 2 tbsp. In the second for 2 servings: nuts 200 g, tomatoes 200 g, cucumber 150 g, olive oil 1 tbsp.
After processing the tool should combine tomatoes (300 + 200 = 500 g) and olive oil (2 + 1 = 3 tbsp.). Other ingredients will remain as is. You will get a grouped list: vegetables (tomatoes, cucumber), groceries (spaghetti, nuts), herbs (basil), oil. Check that nuts did not get into vegetables, and spaghetti - into groceries.
The final list may look like this: "Vegetables: tomatoes 500 g, cucumber 150 g. Groceries: spaghetti 200 g, nuts 200 g. Herbs: basil 20 g. Oil: olive oil 3 tbsp."
The "Shopping list" tool saves time on combining duplicate ingredients, but requires verification. Prepare clear data with units of measurement, specify portions, and after generation check quantities and grouping. Remember that AI does not know your stock and preferences, so the final list always needs manual correction. Use the service as a draft, not as a ready-made solution.
