Shopping list: how to turn dishes into a ready list
The Shopping list tool helps quickly turn a list of dishes into a grouped product list. However, the first result often requires manual refinement: sometimes quantities are missing, ingredients are named differently, or the list ends up too general. In this guide we’ll walk through a specific iteration: from the first draft to a final list you can take to the store. We won’t invent non-existent features — only what’s available in the web form: two input fields, output language selection and a Generate button. You’ll learn to check the result, supplement it and avoid typical errors.
Open tool: Shopping list maker ↗What exactly the tool does and what it receives as input
The Shopping list tool is a text generator that combines ingredients from provided dishes into one grouped list. Two input fields are provided: “Source material” (up to 8000 characters) and “People or portions” (up to 1000 characters). In the first field you describe dishes and their ingredients in free form. In the second you indicate how many people or portions the dishes are for. The tool does not search for recipes on the internet and does not verify them for accuracy — it works only with what you entered.
On output you get one text result in a separate panel. It can be copied or downloaded as TXT. There are no DOCX, PDF, batch processing or automatic saving here. It is important to understand: the tool is not a shopping management system, it only helps structure information. If you need a list for a week, you will have to either enter all dishes at once or manually combine results.
Output language can be selected. This is useful if you are cooking by recipes in different languages or want the list in Russian. However the tool does not translate product names perfectly: literal translations or transliteration are possible. So after generation it is worth checking that all positions are understandable.
Example input: Source material: “Pasta with tomatoes and basil: spaghetti 200 g, tomatoes 3 pcs., basil 1 bunch, olive oil 2 tbsp. Salad with nuts, tomatoes and cucumber: nut 1 can, tomatoes 2 pcs., cucumber 1 pc., lemon juice 1 tbsp., olive oil 1 tbsp.” People or portions: “2 portions”.
First result: what usually happens
After pressing the Generate button you will see a list grouped by categories or by dishes. In our example with pasta and salad the tool may combine tomatoes: 3 pcs. in pasta, 2 pcs. in salad, total 5 pcs. However it may not add quantities if units differ or if ingredients are named differently. For example, “tomatoes” and “pomi” may remain as two separate items.
Missing quantities are also possible: if the original text does not specify a quantity, the tool may write “tomatoes to taste” or just “tomatoes”. This is not an error, but a limitation: it does not know exactly how much is needed. In such cases you have to guess yourself, based on the recipe or common sense.
Another feature: the tool may add generic categories, such as “vegetables” or “dry goods”. This is convenient for navigation but sometimes hides specific positions. Check that all ingredients are in place and edit the text manually if necessary.
Possible first result: “Vegetables: tomatoes — 5 pcs., cucumber — 1 pc., basil — 1 bunch. Dry goods: spaghetti — 200 g, nut — 1 can. Other: olive oil — 3 tbsp., lemon juice — 1 tbsp.”
How to check and supplement the list
First of all compare the list with the original text. Go through each dish and make sure all ingredients are accounted for. If something is missing, add it manually. Pay attention to quantities: if the tool did not add identical products, do it yourself. For example, tomatoes from two dishes can be combined into one position with total quantity.
Check units of measurement. The tool may use grams, pcs., tablespoons. If in one dish it says “1 can of nuts”, and in another “200 g of nuts”, they cannot be automatically combined. You have to either bring to one unit or leave as two items. This is normal: the list will still be useful.
Clarify portions. If you specified “2 portions”, but the dishes are calculated for 4, the tool may not recalculate quantities. In this case multiply or divide the ingredients yourself. Remember: the tool does not know how you will cook and does not give guarantees on consumption rates.
After checking you can manually combine: “Tomatoes — 5 pcs. (3 for pasta, 2 for salad)”. Or leave: “Tomatoes for pasta — 3 pcs., tomatoes for salad — 2 pcs.”.
Grouping and order: how to make the list convenient
The tool may group products by categories: vegetables, fruits, dry goods, dairy, meat, spices. If the grouping seems illogical, you can reorder items manually. For example, in a store it is more convenient to go by departments: first vegetables and fruits, then dry goods, then chilled products. Bring the list to this order.
If you are cooking several dishes, you can group products by dishes, not by categories. This is convenient if you will cook them on different days. The tool does not always do this automatically, but you can edit the result. The main thing is that the list is understandable to you.
Do not forget about products that are often at home: salt, pepper, oil. The tool may not include them if they are not specified in the original text. Check if you need to buy anything and add to the list.
Convenient order: “Vegetables and greens: tomatoes 5 pcs., cucumber 1 pc., basil 1 bunch. Dry goods: spaghetti 200 g, nut 1 can. Oils and sauces: olive oil 3 tbsp., lemon juice 1 tbsp.”
Tool limitations and typical errors
The tool does not check recipes for realism and does not give nutrition advice. It does not know what you have already bought and does not consider shelf life. All purchase decisions are yours. Do not rely on it as the only source: it is a draft that needs refinement.
The model may make errors: confuse names, incorrectly add quantities, skip ingredients. Queue and availability may vary. Always check the result. If something seems strange, it is better to check manually.
The tool is not intended for financial, medical or legal calculations. Do not use it for diet composition or calorie calculation without consulting a specialist. This is an educational example, not a personalized recommendation.
Typical error: the tool wrote “tomatoes — 5 pcs.”, but did not specify that 3 are needed for pasta, and 2 for salad. If you are cooking only one dish, the quantity may be excessive.
Practical example of full cycle
Suppose you entered two dishes: pasta with tomatoes and basil (spaghetti 200 g, tomatoes 3 pcs., basil 1 bunch, olive oil 2 tbsp.) and nut salad with tomatoes and cucumber (nut 1 can, tomatoes 2 pcs., cucumber 1 pc., lemon juice 1 tbsp., olive oil 1 tbsp.). You specified “2 portions”. The tool output a list grouped by categories.
You check: tomatoes — 5 pcs., cucumber — 1 pc., basil — 1 bunch, spaghetti — 200 g, nut — 1 can, olive oil — 3 tbsp., lemon juice — 1 tbsp. Everything is in place. You decide it is more convenient to go by departments, and reorder items: first vegetables, then dry goods, then oils. Add salt and pepper if you have them at home.
Now you have a ready list that can be copied to notes or downloaded as TXT. This is the final result obtained after one or two iterations. The tool saved time on combining, and you brought the list to a convenient form.
Final list: “Vegetables and greens: tomatoes 5 pcs., cucumber 1 pc., basil 1 bunch. Dry goods: spaghetti 200 g, nut 1 can. Oils and sauces: olive oil 3 tbsp., lemon juice 1 tbsp. Additionally: salt, pepper to taste.”
The Shopping list tool is an assistant for quickly creating a draft. It does not replace planning and does not guarantee accuracy. To get a ready list, you need to check ingredients, combine identical positions, clarify quantities and order by convenience. Use it as a starting point, not as a final solution. Remember the limitations: no batch processing, no automatic saving, model may make errors. Always check the result manually. This example is educational and not a personalized nutrition or shopping recommendation.
