Text to speech: practical guide to narration

The "Text to speech" tool reads entered text aloud in a browser voice or creates a synthetic recording using eSpeak NG. It supports 38 languages, but voice availability depends on the device. Many do not get the result they expected due to errors in source data or unclear requirements. This guide analyzes typical problems and ways to fix them. All examples are fictional and provided for illustration.

How the tool works and what it does not do

You enter text in the "Your text or idea" field (up to 8000 characters), select the output language and press "Generate". The tool either narrates the text using a browser voice if available on your device, or creates a WAV file using eSpeak NG. The result appears in a separate panel, it can be copied or downloaded as plain text TXT. For subtitles, SRT format is available. No sliders, style presets or change levels exist.

Important to understand limitations: the tool does not clone voices, does not create audio or video content, does not perform batch processing and does not automatically save results. It also does not generate photorealistic images — only vector compositions in SVG and PNG. If you need a specific timbre or intonation, this is beyond the tool's capabilities.

The browser voice depends on the operating system and installed voice packages. On one device only one language may be available, on another — several. eSpeak NG works independently of the browser, but its pronunciation sounds more robotic. The choice between these two modes happens automatically or according to language settings.

Example: input "Hello, this is a test" with Russian language selection. If the browser voice is unavailable, the tool will offer eSpeak NG synthesis.

Error 1: text too long or too short

The 8000 character limit for the first field is often ignored. If the text exceeds the limit, the tool may truncate it or return an error. Users paste entire book chapters, then wonder why the narration cuts off in the middle. Solution: break the text into parts of 2000-3000 characters and narrate them separately.

Text that is too short is also a problem. A single word or abbreviation may be pronounced incorrectly, especially if the language is not defined. For example, "AI" in Russian may sound as "ai" and not "A I". Add context or clarify pronunciation in the text.

For the details field (up to 1000 characters) it is not necessary to duplicate the main text. It is better to specify the output language, desired tempo or special wishes if the tool supports them. But remember: in the current version there are no tempo or voice height settings.

Input: "He said: AI is the future." Better: "He said: A I is the future."

Error 2: ambiguous language and pronunciation requirements

The tool supports 38 languages, but does not always automatically determine the text language. If you write in Russian but select English, the result will be meaningless. Always explicitly specify the output language. If the text contains foreign words, they may be pronounced according to the rules of the selected language, leading to distortion.

Mixed texts (for example, Russian with English terms) are a frequent cause of errors. eSpeak NG may switch between languages, but the browser voice often pronounces everything in one language. Solution: either unify the language, or break the text into fragments and narrate them separately with different language settings.

Ambiguous requirements for intonation, pauses or stresses are not supported. The tool does not understand instructions like "read sadly" or "make a pause after the comma". All you can do is place punctuation marks and hope the synthesizer will take them into account.

Input: "Iskra AI is a tool." With Russian language selection "Iskra AI" may sound as "Iskra AI". Better to write "Iskra A I".

Error 3: unsuitable output format

The tool offers only TXT for text, WAV for speech and SRT for subtitles. If you need MP3, DOCX or PDF, you will not get them. Users try to download audio in MP3 and are disappointed. Solution: convert WAV to MP3 using third-party means if necessary.

Subtitles SRT are created based on text, but are not automatically synchronized with audio. If you plan to use them with narration, you will have to manually adjust the timings. The tool does not perform audio and text alignment.

Copying the result from the panel may lose formatting if you paste it into an editor. To preserve structure, download the TXT file. For audio use the download WAV button.

After speech generation download WAV, then open it in an audio editor and export to MP3.

Error 4: ignoring device limitations

The browser voice depends on the device. On one computer only an English voice may be available, on a smartphone — several. If you select a language for which there is no voice, the tool may switch to eSpeak NG or return an error. Check available voices in browser or system settings.

eSpeak NG does not require voice installation, but its pronunciation is less natural. If naturalness is important, use the browser voice, but make sure it supports the desired language. On some devices browser voices may be unavailable due to security policies.

Audio size limit in the browser — 20 MB or 5 minutes. If the text is long, narration may stop. Break the text into parts and generate several files.

On a device with only one English voice Russian text will be narrated via eSpeak NG with a characteristic accent.

How to check the result and fix errors

After generation listen to the audio fully. Pay attention to the pronunciation of names, abbreviations and numbers. If something sounds wrong, fix the text and generate again. For example, number "123" may be read as "one hundred twenty three" or "one two three" depending on language and synthesizer.

To check SRT subtitles open the file in a text editor. Make sure the time marks correspond to the audio. If not, edit manually. The tool does not guarantee exact synchronization.

If the result is unsatisfactory, try changing the language, breaking the text into shorter phrases or replacing problematic words with more phonetically simple ones. Remember that the model may make mistakes, and queue and voice availability may change.

Instead of "g. Moscow" write "city Moscow" to avoid incorrect reading of the abbreviation.

Tool limitations and typical misconceptions

The tool is not intended for professional narration. It does not support voice cloning, emotional coloring or fine intonation tuning. Do not expect synthesized speech to be indistinguishable from human. This is a utility for quick text listening or creating draft audio.

No batch processing, automatic saving or integration with other services. You cannot upload a document and get a ready audio file — you will have to copy text manually. There is also no registration, premium plan or email delivery.

The tool does not perform OCR and does not work with images for text recognition. Vector images (SVG, PNG) are a separate function unrelated to narration. Do not confuse these capabilities.

Attempting to upload a PDF for narration will not work: the tool accepts only text entered in the field.

The "Text to speech" tool in Iskra AI is a simple way to narrate text, but it requires careful attention to input and understanding of limitations. Main errors: text that is too long or too short, ambiguous language, unsuitable output format, and ignoring device capabilities. Fix them by breaking text into parts, explicitly specifying the language, and checking the result. Remember, this is not a professional recording studio, but a utility with clear boundaries. Examples in the article are fictional and serve for illustration.
