Code from description: how to write programs without automatic execution
«Code from description» is a tool that transforms a textual description of a task into a small program with usage instructions, explicit assumptions and no automatic execution. It is suitable for everyday tasks: processing lists, file handling, simple calculations, data preparation. Unlike full development environments, here you get a ready-made code snippet that you need to check and run yourself. In this article we will explain how to formulate the task correctly, which fields to fill in, how to assess the result and which limitations to take into account.
Ouvrir l'outil: Générateur de code ↗What exactly does the tool do
The tool accepts three text fields: «Your text or idea», «Platform or application» and «Goal or desired result». Based on this description it generates a small program code with comments, a launch instruction and a list of assumptions. The code is not executed automatically: you get only text that you can copy or download in TXT format. This is important because the responsibility for checking and running remains with you.
The tool is not a development environment and does not connect to your files or services. It does not automatically save results, does not send them by e-mail and does not publish them. All you get is one result in a separate panel. If you need several variants, you have to generate them sequentially, as batch processing is not provided.
The field «Your text or idea» is limited to 8000 characters, and the details field - 1000 characters. This means that the description should be specific, but without unnecessary details. The more precisely you describe the input data, expected behavior and limitations, the more useful the result will be.
Example request: «Write a Python function that removes duplicates from a list, preserving order. Assume the input is a list of strings. Add a launch instruction and an example call».
How to formulate the task: practical steps
Start with one specific action. Instead of «make a program for data processing» write «write a script that reads a text file and outputs the number of lines». The narrower the task, the easier it is to check the result. If the task is large, break it into several requests and generate code in parts.
In the second field specify the platform or application. For example, «Python 3.10», «JavaScript in the browser», «Bash for Linux». This affects syntax and available libraries. If the platform is not specified, the tool may choose something by default, and the result will have to be adapted manually.
In the third field describe the goal or desired result. For example, «get a list of unique values», «save the result to a file», «output data to the console». This helps the tool understand what exactly is considered successful execution. Do not forget about assumptions: if the input data can be empty or contain errors, indicate this in the description.
Fields: input - «there is a list of email addresses, need to remove duplicates and output only valid addresses»; platform - «Python 3.10»; goal - «get a cleaned list and save it to file emails.txt».
Realistic example: from description to code
Suppose you want to write a function that removes duplicates from a list, preserving order. In the «Your text or idea» field you write: «Write a Python function that accepts a list of strings and returns a new list without duplicates, preserving the original order. Add a launch instruction and an example call». In the «Platform» field you specify «Python 3.10». In the «Goal» field - «get a ready function with comments and an example».
The tool can return code similar to this: def remove_duplicates(items): seen = set(); result = []; for item in items: if item not in seen: seen.add(item); result.append(item); return result. Below will be comments, a launch instruction and an assumption that the input is a list of strings. This is an example, not a guaranteed result: the actual code may differ.
After receiving the code check it yourself. Run it on test data, make sure the order is preserved and duplicates are removed. If there are errors or unclear places in the code, clarify the request and generate a new variant. Remember, the tool does not execute code and does not check it for you.
Input: ['a', 'b', 'a', 'c', 'b'] -> Output: ['a', 'b', 'c']. Check that the function does not modify the original list and correctly handles an empty list.
How to check the result and which limitations to take into account
First, after generation, you need to read the code and comments. Make sure the assumptions match your situation. If the tool assumes that a file exists, and you don't have it, the code needs to be adapted. If the code uses libraries that are not in your environment, you will have to install or replace them.
Second - check the launch instruction. It should be understandable and correspond to your platform. If the instruction is incomplete, supplement it yourself. Do not run code if you do not understand what it does. The tool does not guarantee safety or correctness, so responsibility for the consequences lies with you.
Third - take into account the tool's limitations. It does not execute code, does not automatically save results, does not support batch processing and does not integrate with external services. Maximum length of the first field - 8000 characters, second - 1000 characters. Answers may contain errors, and queue availability may change. If the result does not suit you, try to reformulate the task.
If the code uses the pandas library, and you don't have it, replace it with standard means or install the library. Check that the Python version matches the specified one.
Everyday usage scenarios
The tool is convenient for small routine tasks: cleaning lists, renaming files, counting statistics, format conversion. For example, you can ask to write a script that reads a CSV file and outputs the number of rows and columns. Or a function that checks if a string is a palindrome. Such tasks do not require complex architecture, and the tool handles them in one request.
Another scenario - learning. If you are learning programming, you can generate code examples with comments and analyze them. But remember: the tool does not explain code as a teacher would. You will have to analyze the logic and check the work yourself.
For more complex tasks the tool may not be suitable. It is not intended for creating large projects, working with databases or network requests. If the task goes beyond a small program, it is better to break it into parts or use specialized development environments.
Request: «Write a Bash script that renames all .txt files in the current folder, adding the backup_ prefix». Check that the script does not affect other files.
Typical errors and how to avoid them
One of the most common errors - too general description. For example, «write a program for data processing» does not give the tool an understanding of what exactly is needed. As a result, the code may be useless. Try to describe specific input and output data, as well as processing steps.
Another error - ignoring assumptions. The tool may explicitly indicate that it assumes certain conditions. If you do not check them, the code may fail at execution. Always read the assumptions section and adapt the code to your situation.
Third error - running code without checking. Even if the code looks correct, it may contain errors or be unsafe. Do not run code that deletes files or changes the system without prior testing in an isolated environment.
If the tool assumes that the input is a non-empty list, and you pass an empty list, the function may give an error. Add an emptiness check yourself.
«Code from description» is a helper tool for creating small programs from textual descriptions. It does not execute code automatically, does not save results and does not guarantee correctness. To get a useful result, formulate the task specifically, indicate the platform and goal, check assumptions and test the code yourself. The tool is suitable for everyday tasks and learning, but does not replace full development. Remember the limitations: maximum field length, lack of batch processing and possible errors in answers. Use it as a helper, not as a ready-made solution.
