Repeated draws and draws without replacement
Imagine a range from 1 to 5. If each result is independent and the number is not removed, a sequence such as 2, 2, 4 is possible. This is sampling with replacement: the full range is available after every pick.
When you enable no repeats, a selected number is excluded from the current run. You can get no more than five unique results from five values. This works for participant numbers, cards, tasks or any situation where the same item should not be selected twice in one sequence.
Set a valid range
- Enter whole-number minimum and maximum values. Both endpoints are included, so the range 1–20 contains twenty values.
- Set the number of results. With no repeats, make sure the requested count does not exceed the range size.
- Enable No repeats when a number should appear at most once in this run.
- Generate the sequence and review its format. Start another run for a separate independent draw.
- For names, tasks or text choices, use a list picker instead of a numeric range.
A quick range calculation
The inclusive range from 1 through 20 has 20 possible values: 20 − 1 + 1. You can draw ten different numbers without repeats, but not 21 unique results. A range from 7 to 7 contains only one available value: 7.
Repeats may be expected when simulating independent dice rolls or picking a number repeatedly from an unchanged range. Unique results suit sampling without replacement. Decide what the task means first, then choose the setting; no repeats is not automatically the better mode for every use.
Common questions
Are the range limits included?
Yes. The minimum and maximum can both be selected. A range from 1 to 10 contains ten whole numbers.
Why can I not request too many numbers without repeats?
A finite range contains a limited number of unique whole numbers. The requested count cannot be greater than that amount.
Do repeated numbers mean the generator is broken?
No. Repeats are possible in independent draws. They are excluded only when No repeats is enabled.
